Faecal Incontinence, sphincter weakness, pelvic floor weakness

Which problems are caused by sphincter weakness? The lack of ability to hold stool seriously affects quality of life.

How is sphincter weakness diagnosed? Sphincter weakness is diagnosed by proctological examination, ultrasound and sphincter pressure measurement.

Does sphincter weakness require surgery? No, surgery is usually not necessary. Often, a good quality of life can be regained quickly through measures such as solidifying stool, targeted evacuation and pelvic floor training (with and without electrical stimulation).

How is sphincter weakness operated on? If surgery is necessary, sphincter repair with suture, sacral nerve stimulation (SNS), or application of an artificial sphincter may be helpful to most of our patients.
